about

Most of this material was recorded at live performances which occurred between 1998 and 2000. These tracks were originally released, in different form, on three live albums - "Your Daibatsu Moment" (1998), "Jars Too Beg" (1999), and "42 Judges" (2000). These albums are now out of print; these current versions of this material supersede all previous editions. Material has been added, revised, edited out, shuffled around, etc.

"When Vacuum Tree Head started up, playing to a sparse crowd clustered around the bar or the pool table, there arose such a clatter that I stared at the stage to see what was the matter. 'This is the time to put in your earplugs,' a band member warned before the eight-piece orchestra of doom began its sonic assault. With clarinet, violin, flute, toy megaphone, and a percussion set that included various pieces of scrap metal and a series of metal cafeteria bins, the combo pounded out a crazed hodgepodge of circus tunes, spy movie themes, stumbling waltzes, a version of "Peter Gunn" recognizable only by its baseline, and other oddly baroque de-compositions. Seemingly conducting this anarchic jumble with flailing gestures, his shoulders hunched up to his ears, was a short twentywhatever guy barking what I can only assume were lyrics.
... A smorgasbord of Saharan clarinet mating calls, creeping guitar, thunderous bass and drums, and clanking metal."

vacuum tree head San Francisco, California

Vacuum Tree Head was formed by Jason Berry and Michael de la Cuesta in a garage in south San José, California, in 1989. Inspired equally by punk rock, free jazz, electronic music and modern composition, we recorded in whatever style we wanted, on whatever instrument we could get our hands on, in whichever manner we pleased. VTH ceased operations in December of 2019. ... more
