about

Assorted live material, recorded between 1991 and 2005. Some of this material appeared on a cassette of the same name, which saw a very limited release (25 copies with handmade covers) in 1995.

"Well, what a night! Tiff and I were running a little late (well, that's another story, we'll talk about that later...), so we got to Foothill College in a mad rush, we barely found a place to park, blah blah blah... Up the 1001 steps, with Tiff mewing in my ear, "Who the hell is Vacuum Tree Head and why should I care?" Well, by the time we got to the top of the hill, we didn't need anybody to tell us where the gig was - we just followed the gawdawful din to its source. And there, in all its mad, poisonous glory, was the band we came to see - the V to the T to the H.
Fact #1: There's seven members - a drummer, a bassist, 2 guitars, a flute (!!) player, a singer/screamer, and a guy on keyboards/xylophone/guitar/loudspeaker/and comedy!
Fact #2: They're all really talented musicians, but I'm not sure I really understand what it is they are playing - or singing. I think some of the songs are in languages other than English; I'll have to look into that.
Fact #3: It was an amazing live show, lots of jumping around and intensity. It's incredible how much energy comes across, even if I left the theatre feeling as if I watched one of those Italian sunglass artsy films without any of the little words across the bottom.
The show was being broadcast by our friends at KFJC - major props to all at the station for this sort of adventurous aural exploration."
-M.B., Silicon Valley Metro (August 2005)

"...Vacuum Tree Head is a true experiment in dissonance and disturbance. Each of the band members plays at least three instruments; the main instruments used are bongos (with contact mics and effects), percussion rack with old car springs, brake drums, two drum kits, lots of cymbals, horns, clarinets, saxophone, electric guitars, electric bass, xylophone, and miscellaneous other objects that get introduced from time to time.
...Nearing the final act, the entire band picks up saxes, trumpets, or any other horn and begins to walk around the audience, and then outside (!), only to return shortly afterward, a policeman across the street watching with trepidation."
-Dan Kletter, Escape From Noise #24 (1992)

about

vacuum tree head San Francisco, California

Vacuum Tree Head was formed by Jason Berry and Michael de la Cuesta in a garage in south San José, California, in 1989. Inspired equally by punk rock, free jazz, electronic music and modern composition, we recorded in whatever style we wanted, on whatever instrument we could get our hands on, in whichever manner we pleased. VTH ceased operations in December of 2019. ... more
